Quick answer
Barakhadi (बारहखड़ी) is the chart of every Hindi consonant with every vowel sign: क का कि की कु कू के कै को कौ कं कः. “Barah” means twelve — the twelve forms of each letter.
It is the same idea as the Tamil உயிர்மெய் table (க கா கி கீ…), and the fastest way to start reading Hindi words.
How to read this chart
Each box is one consonant. Read it left to right: the plain letter, then the letter with ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ ं ः. The small English letters under each syllable show how it sounds. Tap any syllable to hear it.
The chart covers all 33 consonants from क to ह and the four joined letters क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र — 444 syllables in all. Print it, or save it as a PDF from the print window, to keep in your notebook.

Rows that need extra care
Why some charts have 13 or 14 forms
The classic barakhadi has twelve forms. Some charts add कृ (with the ऋ matra) for 13, and some also add कँ with the moon-dot for 14. They are all correct — it only depends on the book. Our guide to every matra explains ृ and ँ.
How to practise barakhadi
- One row a day, aloud. Read it left to right twice, then right to left once.
- Write it from memory. Cover the chart and write the row once in your notebook. Check it, and circle any mistake.
- Read a real word. Find one word that uses the row — किताब for क, गुलाब for ग — and read it aloud.
Five rows a week finishes the chart in about two months. You do not need to wait for that: start reading simple words as soon as the first few rows are done.
Questions learners ask
What is barakhadi in Hindi?
Barakhadi (बारहखड़ी) is the chart of each consonant joined with each vowel sign: क का कि की कु कू के कै को कौ कं कः. 'Barah' means twelve — the twelve forms of each letter.
Why do some barakhadi charts have 12 and others 13 or 14 forms?
The classic chart has 12 forms. Some add कृ (with the ऋ matra) to make 13, and some add the nasal कँ (chandrabindu) as well. The core twelve are the same in every chart.
What is the barakhadi of र?
र रा रि री रु रू रे रै रो रौ रं रः. Note that रु and रू are written differently from other letters — the u signs sit beside र, not under it.
How do I practise barakhadi?
Read one row aloud every day, left to right, then write it once in your notebook from memory. Five rows a week is enough to finish the chart in about two months, alongside reading words.
