Hindi half letters and joined letters, explained simply

அரை எழுத்துக்கள் — தமிழின் புள்ளி (்) போலவே!

By the Karu AI team · Updated

Quick answer

A half letter (आधा अक्षर) is a consonant with no vowel sound, joined to the next consonant. In बच्चा (bachchaa, child) the first च is half.

If you read Tamil, you already know this idea: it is the புள்ளி. क् is க். Tamil keeps the dot on top; Hindi usually joins the half letter to the next one instead.

Half letters are the Tamil pulli

Take the Tamil word பக்தன். The க் has a pulli because it has no vowel. The Hindi word is भक्त (bhakt): भ + क् + त. The half क् sits right against त, and together they make क्त.

So when you see two consonants squeezed together, read the first one like a Tamil letter with a pulli — no vowel — and the second one normally.

How half letters are written

1. Letters with a standing line drop the line

Most consonants have a standing line (।) on the right. To make them half, write them without it: च → half च in बच्चा, त → half त in पत्ता, स → half स in स्कूल.

2. क and फ cut their tail

क and फ have a curl in place of a straight line. Their half forms cut it short: क्या (kyaa, what), पक्का (pakkaa, sure).

3. Letters with no standing line use ् or stack up

ट ठ ड ढ द ह have no standing line to drop. They take the small slanting stroke ् (halant), or the next letter is written under them: विद्या (vidyaa, learning), कट्टर (kattar, stubborn).

र changes shape more than any other letter. Learn these three and most “strange” Hindi words become easy.

Questions learners ask

What is a half letter in Hindi?

A half letter is a consonant without its 'a' sound, joined to the next letter. In बच्चा (bachchā), the first च is half. It is the same idea as the Tamil pulli: க் is க without its vowel.

How is ज्ञ pronounced in Hindi?

In Hindi, ज्ञ is usually said 'gya': ज्ञान is 'gyān'. Tamil writes the same word ஞானம், which is closer to the Sanskrit sound.

What are the four joined letters at the end of the Hindi alphabet?

क्ष (क् + ष, as in क्षमा), त्र (त् + र, as in मित्र), ज्ञ (ज् + ञ, as in ज्ञान) and श्र (श् + र, as in श्रम). They are taught as letters because their shapes change when the two parts join.

Why does र have different shapes?

When र comes before another consonant, it becomes a small hook on top (कर्म, धर्म). When it comes after a consonant, it becomes a small slanted stroke at the foot (प्रेम, ग्राम). On its own it is र.
