क ख ग घ in Tamil: how to say the Hindi sounds Tamil doesn't write
க ஒன்று, இந்தியில் நான்கு — ஒலி வேறுபாட்டை எளிதாகக் கேட்கலாம்

Quick answer
Tamil writes one letter, க, where Hindi has four: क (ka), ख (kha), ग (ga) and घ (gha).
ख and घ add a puff of breath. ग and घ are voiced — your throat buzzes. The same rule works for च छ ज झ, ट ठ ड ढ, त थ द ध and प फ ब भ.
Why these sounds are hard for Tamil speakers
Tamil does have the “g” sound — you say it in மகன் (magan) and தங்கம் (thangam). But Tamil decides the sound by the letter's position, so one letter is enough, and a Tamil ear learns to treat “k” and “g” as the same thing.
Hindi gives each sound its own letter, and changing it changes the word: पल is a moment, फल is a fruit. So the job is not to learn new sounds from nothing — it is to notice two differences your mouth already makes.
The four sounds of each row
| Tamil | Plain | + breath | Voiced | Voiced + breath |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| க | क | ख | ग | घ |
| ச | च | छ | ज | झ |
| ட | ट | ठ | ड | ढ |
| த | त | थ | द | ध |
| ப | प | फ | ब | भ |
Read the table across: plain, add breath, add voice, add both. That is 20 letters with one rule. (Each row also ends with a nasal — ङ ञ ण न म — which Tamil already has: ங ஞ ண ந ம.)
Test 1: the paper test for breath
- Hold a thin strip of paper, or your palm, about three fingers in front of your lips.
- Say प (pa). The paper hardly moves.
- Now say फ (pha), with a small “h” after the “p”. The paper flutters.
- Try क / ख, त / थ and च / छ. The breathy letter always moves the paper more.
Test 2: the throat test for voice
- Put two fingers lightly on the front of your throat.
- Say a long क… then a long ग…
- With ग you feel a buzz. That buzz is the voice. ज, ड, द and ब buzz the same way.
- For घ, keep the buzz and add the breath from Test 1: “g-h-a”, said quickly as one sound.

How to write these sounds in Tamil letters
Tamil has no letters for them, so learners use a few conventions. Karu AI writes ख as க்ஹ, ग as க (ga) and घ as க்ஹ (gha). Some Tamil books use small numbers instead: க, க², க³, க⁴ for क, ख, ग, घ. Use whichever your teacher uses — but learn to read the Hindi letter itself as soon as you can.
One pair Tamil already gets right: ट = ட (tongue curled back) and त = த (tongue on the teeth). Keep that difference in Hindi.
A 5-minute daily practice
- 1 minute: read one row of the table across, slowly — क ख ग घ.
- 2 minutes: the paper and throat tests on that row.
- 2 minutes: three word pairs, aloud, twice each.
Do one row a day and you will have practised all five in a week. Then move on to reading practice with real words.
Questions learners ask
How do you write ख, ग and घ in Tamil letters?
Tamil has no separate letters for them, so Karu AI writes ख as க்ஹ, ग as க (ga) and घ as க்ஹ (gha). Some Tamil books mark them with small numbers instead: க, க², க³, க⁴.
What is an aspirated letter in Hindi?
An aspirated letter is said with a puff of breath, like a small 'h' after the sound: ख (kha), छ (chha), ठ (Tha), थ (tha), फ (pha), and the voiced ones घ, झ, ढ, ध, भ. Hold a paper in front of your mouth — it moves for aspirated letters.
Does the wrong sound change the meaning of a Hindi word?
Yes. पल means a moment and फल means a fruit; दान is a donation and धान is paddy; दाल is lentils and डाल is a branch. That is why these sounds are worth practising.
What is the difference between ट and त for Tamil speakers?
ट is said with the tongue curled back, like Tamil ட. त is said with the tongue touching the teeth, like Tamil த. So ट = ட and त = த.
